How to Order an Alaskan Camper
A step-by-step guide with FAQs covering lead times, deposits, customization options, pickup logistics, and what to expect after you place your order.
You’re ready to go with an Alaskan Camper—great choice. Now you’re probably wondering how to actually get one. Whether you’re considering a model from our current inventory or planning a custom build, this guide walks you through the full process. From placing your deposit to setting a pickup date, we’ll cover everything you need to know to make ordering straightforward and stress-free.
Step 1: Choose Your Camper — In-Stock or Custom Build
You’ve got two great options when it comes to getting into an Alaskan Camper:
Browse our available inventory
We now offer a selection of prebuilt campers—ready for quick delivery or pickup. These are fully outfitted Alaskans built with our most popular layouts and upgrade packages, ideal if you’re looking to skip the wait and hit the road sooner. Inventory changes regularly, so check our site or call to see what’s available.
Build your camper from scratch
Prefer a custom setup? We still offer full design-to-order builds. You’ll choose the model, floorplan, finishes, and optional features—then we’ll build it to spec at our shop in Winlock, WA. Lead times typically run 4–5 months from deposit to pickup for standard builds, and longer for flatbeds or highly customized configurations.
Either way, once you’re ready to move forward, we’ll issue a detailed proposal. Your spot in the production queue or inventory hold is secured with a deposit. From there, we’ll walk you through the next steps.

Step 2: Locking It In — Deposit & Payment Basics
Once you’ve chosen your build or inventory unit, we’ll issue a detailed proposal outlining your model, layout, options, and total price.
To secure your camper or production slot, we require a $5,000 deposit. This locks in your place in line and allows us to prep materials and schedule your build. Your signed proposal also confirms the included features—so take a final look before you commit.
⚠️ Deposits are non-refundable once received. If you have any doubts, questions, or timing concerns, let us know before submitting payment—we’re happy to talk it through.
The remaining balance is due on or before Loadout Day. We accept check or bank wire for final payment—just confirm your preferred method ahead of time so we can prepare accordingly.

Step 3: Build Phase — Craft, Quality, & Attention to Detail
Once your deposit’s in, our team gets to work—building your camper by hand in Winlock, Washington, where Alaskan Campers have been made for generations. CNC machinery supports key cuts, but much of the craftsmanship remains hands-on: from cabinetry and trim installation to stitched dinette seating and custom-fit components.
Each camper goes through a multi-stage inspection process—lift system tests, propane and electrical checks, seal and weatherproofing reviews—so by the time you arrive, your camper isn’t just built. It’s been tested, inspected, and prepped for your first trip.

STEP 4: LOADOUT DAY
When Loadout Day arrives, your camper will be fully prepped and ready to mount. Whether you’re picking up in Winlock or at one of our trusted partner sites, you’ll get a thorough walkthrough to ensure you’re fully comfortable before hitting the road.
We’ll show you how to operate the lift system, manage your power and water setups, and walk through any components specific to your build. If your configuration includes tie-downs or installation hardware, we’ll take care of that on-site. Plan for about 2–4 hours so you have time to ask questions and get hands-on with your camper.
Most customers pick up their camper at our headquarters in Winlock, WA. We don’t ship campers to partner locations for pickup, but a few of our trusted partners—like Pop Top Overland in San Diego and American Camper Shells in Stanton—sell Alaskan Campers directly and offer full professional Loadouts. They’re part of a growing partner network, so stay tuned—more locations are on the way.
We coordinate directly with each partner team to ensure your camper is ready, your walkthrough is thorough, and your Loadout experience runs smoothly—wherever you’re picking up.

STEP 5: WHAT HAPPENS AFTER
Your journey doesn’t stop when you drive off—it just shifts into gear. In the days after Loadout, it’s totally normal to have follow-up questions. From inverter settings to water system quirks, our team is here to help if anything needs a second look or clarification.
If you’re planning to unload and store your camper for a while, it’s important to know: Alaskan Campers aren’t designed to rest on jack stands alone. Their two-piece design and full-size rear door require even support to avoid long-term stress or damage. For safe storage, we recommend:
- A flat, level surface
- Heavy-duty sawhorses with a plywood platform
- Or a custom pallet that supports the full base evenly

Ordering FAQs
How long does it take to build an Alaskan Camper?
Standard slide-in builds typically take about 4–5 months. More customized builds—especially flatbeds—can take 6 months or longer. If you choose from our in-stock inventory, you could be on the road in just a few days.
What trucks work best with an Alaskan?
We recommend a ¾-ton or heavier truck (like a Ford F‑250/F‑350, Ram 2500/3500, or Chevy/GMC 2500/3500) to safely support camper weight. Both 6.5′ and 8′ beds are compatible depending on your floor plan. We’ll review fit and payload with you during the proposal process.
How much does an Alaskan Camper weigh?
It varies by model. Here’s a general breakdown:
- 6.5’ model – ~1,800 lbs dry, ~2,400 lbs wet
- 8.5’ model – ~1,950 lbs dry, ~2,600+ lbs wet
Wet weight includes water, propane, battery, and gear. A ¾-ton truck or larger is usually the best match. Always confirm your truck’s payload rating before moving forward.
Can I tow a trailer or boat behind my camper?
Yep. That’s one of the advantages of a truck camper—you can still tow. Just make sure your truck’s hitch and payload ratings can handle the combined load of the camper, passengers, cargo, and trailer.
Does Alaskan offer financing?
We don’t finance directly, but we work with Elite Recreational Finance, a trusted partner that offers competitive rates and flexible terms. They can pre-approve you and help simplify the payment process if financing makes sense for your situation.
Can I change my order after placing a deposit?
Yes—within the first 7 days, changes are easy to make. After that, modifications may be limited as we start ordering materials and prepping your build. Remember, your $5,000 deposit becomes non-refundable once production begins.
Do you ship campers?
We don’t offer shipping ourselves. Most customers pick up in Winlock, WA—or at one of our trusted partner locations in Southern California:
- Pop Top Overland – San Diego, CA
- American Camper Shells & Van Works – Stanton, CA
We’ll work with you to make pickup as convenient as possible.
Why do demo units sometimes look more loaded than mine?
Demo campers are often equipped with popular optional upgrades—like solar panels, inverters, roof racks, or larger fridges. If something caught your eye but isn’t on your proposal, ask us about adding it before build.
How should I store my camper?
Alaskan Campers shouldn’t rest on jacks alone—their two-piece design and full-size rear door need even support. We recommend one of the following:
- A flat, level surface
- Heavy-duty sawhorses topped with a plywood platform
- A custom pallet base that fully supports the camper floor
We’re working on a standardized storage guide, and we’re happy to share photos and plans from other owners in the meantime.
